Palm Desert man arrested for suspected DUI crash

 

A Palm Desert man was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after a crash Thursday night in Rancho Mirage, sheriff's officials said.

Aaron Kashola, 26, of Palm Desert, was driving a Chrysler 300 when he hit a Lexus SUV around 11 p.m. on Monterey Ave., just south of the Shadow Ridge intersection.

Four people inside the the Lexus and Kashola were taken to the hospital. Kashola was then booked into the Riverside County jail, deputies said.

Investigators believe alcohol may have played a role in the crash.

Valley braces for another round of wind

A high wind warning went into effect Friday in Riverside County, where forecasters are expecting winds of between 25 and 35 mph and gusts to 60 mph.

The warning issued by the National Weather Service went into effect at 6 a.m. and is scheduled to expire at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Winds will be strongest through and below passes and canyons, including the Cajon and Banning passes in the Inland Empire, the agency advised.

"Strong winds will make driving difficult, especially for motorists with high profile vehicles," according to the Weather Service. "Freeways most likely to be impacted by strong winds include interstates 10 and 15, and highways 60, 91 and 55.

Marriott Gets $1 Million Rebate from Palm Desert

The Palm Desert City Council voted to give the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa $1 million dollars to help fund a water park Thursday.

The $1 million will be in the form of a rebate from its transient occupancy tax once the park opens.

Under the plan passed by the City Council, the Marriott will be given back the additional revenue generated by the water park until the refund reaches $1 million.

It was a close call for American Cab, the largest cab service in the Coachella Valley. The cab company could have been shut down Wednesday due to a dispute over its ownership change but a new interim attorney concluded American Cab did not violate any rules.

"It's reassuring that it's water under the bridge now because there are 85 of us who were at risk of losing our jobs," said Peter Kurzon, a cab driver.

But for several months, Kurzon and another 80 plus employees at American Cab were fearful of losing their jobs.

JW Marriott asks Palm Desert for $1 million towards water park

 

The JW Marriott is asking Palm Desert to contribute $1 million towards a water park on the resort's property.

The Palm Desert City Council will consider the request by the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa on Thursday.

The resort said the proposed $9 million water park is "vital" to the future of Desert Springs, allowing it to become the "predominant player in the leisure market."
